About Dīdī

A Paintbrush in the
Hands of Her Gurus

Born in New York City, Śrīmatī Syāmarāṇī Dāsī — then known as Jaduranī — encountered His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedānta Swāmī Prabhupāda in Tompkins Square Park in 1966, at the age of nineteen. She became one of his very first disciples, and he personally directed every detail of her art from the beginning.

From 1969 to 1982 she served as a principal artist for the Bhaktivedānta Book Trust, painting for his translations of the Bhagavad-gītā As It Is, Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, and Caitanya-caritāmṛta — texts now distributed in over 80 languages with a combined circulation exceeding 550 million copies. Her iconic painting Sevā-kuñja is today worshipped at the Śrī Rūpa-Sanātana Gauḍīya Maṭha in Vṛndāvana.

I am but one of their paintbrushes. It is they who manifested the paintings — by their mercy, empowerment, guidance, and teachings.

— Śrīmatī Syāmarāṇī Dāsī, Bhakti Art Illuminations

In 1992 she came under the guidance of Śrīla Bhaktivedānta Nārāyaṇa Gosvāmī Mahārāja, serving as principal artist and senior editor for Gauḍīya Vedānta Publications from 1997 to 2010, thereafter travelling the world 25 times in sevā. In 2021, Dīdī founded Sacred Vedic Arts in Miami — a Bhakti-yoga temple, cultural centre, and art gallery — as a permanent home for this living tradition.
